For a long time I've been trying to find an excuse to buy the complete works of Sigmund Freud, and I think I've finally stumbled upon the perfect strategy -- start a podcast to force myself to read them!
I’m only half joking with that remark.
The other half — which I hope is less of a joke! — of the equation stems from my frustration with the lack of access to formal psychoanalytic training for lay people like myself. I’m not a counselor or clinician, and while I love my local psychoanalytic society, I want to study deep and wide in the discipline.
I don’t blame anyone in particular for this state of affairs — I just want more.
I recently picked up Peter Gay’s biography of Freud, which has helped me begin to locate Freud’s intellectual developments both in his own personal history and in European history generally. I’m planning to read Freud’s early manuscript A Project of a Scientific Psychology soon, which I’ll use as a focal point to discuss Freud’s work leading up to his partnership with Breuer in Studies in Hysteria.
Since I have a lot of other projects in flight right now, I don’t have a specific timeline for the first episode or the beginning of this project, so your patience is greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, don’t forget to subscribe to my free newsletter at Samsara Diagnostics. I deliver a post about religion, philosophy, or psychoanalysis to your inbox every Friday morning. However, don’t hesitate to subscribe here as well for ongoing updates about Psycho-Babble specifically.
Thanks, and I look forward to when I have more to share.
